The titanate coupling agent and the groups (surface hydroxyl or hydroxyl of bound water, crystalline water, chemically adsorbed water and physically adsorbed water) that can release hydrogen atoms on the surface of magnesium hydroxide particles have a chemical reaction, mainly the formation of Ti-O bond. After treatment with titanate coupling agent, the surface of magnesium hydroxide is covered with a long-chain organic molecular layer, the surface hydrophilicity becomes hydrophobic, the water absorption decreases, the compatibility, wettability and adhesion between magnesium hydroxide and organic phase are improved, and the physical properties and machinability are also improved.
When titanate coupling agent contains long chain groups with branched chain structure or double bonds, it can have stronger entangling or chemical crosslinking with polymers in the composites, which can significantly improve the properties of the composites. The commonly used titanate coupling agent for treating magnesium hydroxide is isopropyl triisooctadecyl titanate, and the suitable polymeric materials are PP and PS; Isopropyl tris (Dodecylbenzene sulfonyl) titanate, suitable polymeric materials are PP, PE, ABS and PS.
